NOTES ON THE REVISION OF THE ORDER FOR THE HOLY COMMUNION. T HE Prayer Book has remained unchanged for more than years; and it is felt that the time has arrived when it should be adapted to the altered needs of the age.

The American Church and the Scottish Church have both revised the Prayer Book for their own use, and to-day the English Convocations are engaged in. Regarding the Anglican Standard Text, the preface says it is: “essentially that of the Holy Communion service of the Book of Common Prayer of and successor books throughand ” While that seems to be true, this text follows elements of Service of Holy Communion and its revision book I that are not present in any of these older editions.

The macro- and micro-structures of the BCP Communion service, like the ones just noted, tend to be razed in liturgical revision, sometimes without any appreciation for why they were there in the first place. The language of offering was a clear point of debate in the revision of the Communion Service in Common Worship. Anglo-Catholics wanted to include ‘these gifts that we offer to you’ in Prayer G, but that was rejected as not expressing Anglican theology, and the texts, slightly awkwardly, reads ‘these gifts that we bring before you.

The Revision of the Communion Service BY THE REv. Receptionism is a form of Anglican eucharistic theology which teaches that during the Eucharist the bread and wine remain unchanged after the consecration, but when communicants receive the bread and wine, they also receive the body and blood of Christ by faith.

It was a common view among Anglicans in the 16th and 17th centuries, and prominent theologians who subscribed to this doctrine were.
